The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands. - Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923.
In the middle of Greater Cameron Highlands, there's a spot of an area slightly over 1,000 acres in the town called Lojing. The forest may not be as perfect as other places but Wild Asia is on a mission of finding what "High Conservation Values" are there to explore and make known.
Wild Asia is working in a race against development plans in the highlands. We need to understand the values of the habitat, not just economic costs but for the benefit of the wildlife, indigenous communities, and local townsmen. Wild Asia takes this challenge as a chance for us and our friends to learn about crucial issues that the environment is facing such as habitat loss, biodiversity threat, water management and conflict, among others.
Courses We Offer
Wild Asia and our associates are extending our knowledge on Natural History to people who are interested about Malaysia's natural beauty and values. We offer three educational themes which are:
1) Natural History of Rainforest to introduce and enhance our understanding of the forests. It is about experiential learning and about making available specialist knowledge on the rainforest, its plants, wildlife and more;
2) Rainforest Exploration which is a day dedicated to trekking with a nature guide to experience the treasures of our forests. This can be extended to more days, or other areas in Cameron Highlands;
3) Sustainable Living is a series of courses to allow you to rethink the way you live, the food you eat and to equip you with the skills to design, produce and build your own sustainable home.
The facility
Moonriver Lodge is a base camp for a 382 hectares located in Sigar Highlands, Lojing, Malaysia. It is a home amidst the highland forests at about 800m above sea level. It is currently hosting an organic kitchen garden, farm and forest seedling nurseries, and expanding an area for organic food production.
It was established to allow people to begin exploring the land and to begin to refine the Master Plan that had been conceptualised for the area by the state government and the developer. Wild Asia is keen to utilize this space, and the opportunity, to bring in fresh ideas, tap into our network of experts or volunteers, and spearhead efforts to understand the land, to experiment with new economic models and to try to develop ideas that might be suitable for the site and provide economic returns. It is a bold step because we are on an uncharted territory and are attempting to do something that has not been done in Malaysia before.
