After graduating with a BA in Archaeology from the University of York (UK) in 2000, Sheema immediately started work as a practising archaeologist at the Department of Museums and Antiquities in Kuala Lumpur. However, after realising that she would much rather work with living things instead of dead things, she quit her post and plunged into the NGO world, starting out with the local heritage conservation trust Badan Warisan Malaysia. At the same time, she volunteered with TRAFFIC Southeast Asia and WWF-Malaysia, which eventually led to more serious environmental conservation work. Although archaeology and ancient history still remain close to her heart, Sheema is happy to report that she is now firmly entrenched in the world of wildlife conservation, and has since found her niche in studying Old World tropical bats. She hopes to eventually become a bat biologist.
