Biodiversity for Busy Managers

by Wild Asia

Biodiversity for Busy Managers is an initiative in partnership with Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) to plug this gap. It aims to provide training, informational resources and advisory support that covers the science, the legal aspects and the practical issues involved in managing biodiversity.

Increasingly, land managers are required to demonstrate that their operations meet stringent biodiversity certification criteria, yet most are inadequately resourced to address industry biodiversity requirements. Biodiversity for Busy Managers (or "B4BM") is an initiative by Wild Asia and the Malaysian Palm Oil Council to develop useful and practical guidance for those directly involved in land development.

These resources will come in multiple formats to enable quick and easy access to information. In 2011, look out for:

  1. A web-based resources center and interactive forum;
  2. A training course delivered during field-based workshops;
  3. A training manual;
  4. A series of topic-based Biodiversity Insight Guides; and
  5. A series of feature articles on Biodiversity and Plantations

The focus of this initiative is on key biodiversity issues that surface during the development of land. These include habitat losses brought on by forest clearance; fragmentation of forests into isolated patches; the impact of monoculture on biodiversity; pollution; water course management; soil erosion and degradation; land rights; and multi-stakeholder issues. Wild Asia works to influence top management into tackling these issues before it's too late.
