Wild Asia began as a simple website known as Wildborneo.net in 1998. Back then, it was an information sharing hub, a place for individuals who shared a passion for forests and communities. It was also a place for users of natural areas to share stories and experiences with like-minded individuals.
The website gained a large readership and the number of contributors also grew. This led to an expansion to Wildasia.net in 2003. In the same year, Wild Asia was also registered as a social enterprise - an organisation aimed at bringing about positive social and environmental change.
Wild Asia developed from a realisation that our natural areas are swiftly being destroyed to make way for development. New economic activities such as forestry, agriculture, and tourism are affecting local communities dependent on those natural resources that are being destroyed. Businesses are gaining economic grounds but losing connection with their surrounding environment.
We saw the need for solutions before these threats got out of hand.
With years of field experience behind us, we're now out there conducting training workshops to get corporations thinking about how their businesses are being run and what kinds of impact they are making on their environment. We want to influence change from within industries, so we also engage with businesses to get them on the sustainability track, by sharing information and nurturing new projects.
Wild Asia is about building self-sustainable models that can be adapted across industries and used to inspire innovative thoughts and solutions. We're constantly learning about new techniques and working models that are effective and progressive so that we can share this knowledge with others. By doing so, we hope to create market leaders in the industries, so that they in turn may inspire others; and that will bring us closer to achieving our mission!
